CASHP Seminar: Dr. Suzana Herculano-Houzel
“What the Distribution of Neurons in the Human Cerebral Cortex Tells about its Evolution”
Dr. Suzana Herculano-Houzel
Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro
Wednesday, September 4 at 11:00 AM
Marvin Center, room 407
About the speaker:
Dr. Herculano-Houzel has pioneered the use of isotropic fractionation to compare cellular composition and neuron distribution in the gray and white matter of humans, apes, and other mammalian species. Using this technique, she has investigated the scaling relationship between neuron/glia number and brain size in the mammalian cerebral cortex and cerebellum. She is also active in public science education; she has authored six books on how neuroscience affects every day life, writes a column for the Brazilian newspaper Folha de São Paulo, and hosts the television series Neurológica that airs on TV Fantástico in Brazil.
